"It's not too late to back out," said Amy.

The porch swing creaked as CJ looked down the bank to the river and shook her head. She pulled a fleece throw tight against her. "I know the Lord told me to take in Nancy and Davey." She glanced to her right and chuckled. "It's the why I'm not sure of."

"The same reason He told me to. It's the right thing to do."

"I know, but I should have talked to David first."

Amy didn't disagree.

The swing kept up its slow, steady rocking. Amy let out a moan of contentment. "I can't imagine a more peaceful place than this."

"Most of the time." said CJ. "We have our occasional brushes with reality."

Amy continued to stare in the river's direction. "I hear you're under a lot of pressure at work."

"I might lose my job and cause a good man to lose his, too."

"Biff said it's because of the car thefts. What else?"

CJ pulled a windblown lock of hair behind her ear. "I'm sure you heard about my officer being killed."

Amy nodded. "Such a shame. What else?"

"Isn't that enough?"

"It's enough, but it isn't everything."

"Are you talking about me and David not being in agreement about Nancy and Davey coming to live with us?"

"Who said you weren't in agreement?"

Even in the muted light, CJ could see the corners of Amy's mouth pull up. CJ thought for a few silent seconds. "Did David and Biff have this all planned out?"

"Not all of it. The free college and the job offer came as a pleasant surprise."

"David planned on us providing Nancy's room and board for the next four years?"

"He committed to it being a year and said it had to be your idea. He and Biff have been plotting for weeks."

More swinging in silence followed and served to dissipate a flash of anger. CJ broke the quiet when she asked, "How did we both get such good men?"

Amy shifted in her seat. "I don't know about you, but I'm still sanding off the rough edges from mine."

They both laughed in agreement and kept swinging.

A loud clang sounded from the garage. Both women turned their heads and listened for screams or something not fit for the children to hear. They turned back after laughter spilled out of the barn.

Amy faced the river and asked, "When are you going to forgive Randy?"

It might as well have been a knife in CJ's belly. She mumbled, "I'm trying, but every time I see him driving that car, my mind goes back to the night I lost her."

"It will affect your relationship with everyone in this house if you don't. Why do you think Davey didn't come to you? He can sense your anger."

The knife twisted. "Sometimes you're a little too direct, Amy."

She shrugged as she rose. "Bea told me that's how I needed to talk to you. I've delivered the message. Do with it what you will. You won't ever hear me say another word about it. I need to get the kids to bed.
